The Big Other, the Little Other

Exhibition

7 – 30 June

The world is a giant mirror, and the dialogue with the external world always reflects on our internal life. The exhibition illustrates the process of the formation of artists’ self-identity by navigating gender, immigration, and intimacy, invites viewers to enter into their sentimental self-narrative, and to think with them about their relationship with the other and the world.

Work by Xinrui Qiu, Ruilin Fu, Yiming Pi, Yuyang Chen, Anna Patarakina, Anne Marie Little, Chiahua Lee. Inspired by Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory exploring the complexities of self-identity through various artistic mediums, including installation, video, and performance.

Tea Ceremony Workshop: 21 June, 3-4 and 4-5pm

Led by Yuyang Chen

The tea ceremony is presented in many different ways not only around the world, but even within China, depending on the region. I was introduced to it at around 15 years old through my mother, who has been a devout Buddhist for over a decade. For her, both the tea ceremony and meditation are spiritual practices that help to eliminate distractions, find calm, boost energy, and heal negative energy. The ceremony involves more than just appreciating the shape, aroma, and taste of tea; it requires engaging all the senses to feel the changes the tea brings to the body and the surroundings. Breath control is also crucial. Inspired by my mother, I gradually fell in love with tea, using it to cultivate the mind. Through this workshop, I aim to share the rich culture of the tea ceremony, helping others find themselves and live in the present amid the rush of modern life.
